Kingsclear man denies two aggravated assaults against same woman
Salem Gordon Leon Paul, 26, stands accused of four instances of intimate-partner violence from last fall
A Kingsclear First Nation man will stand trial in three months’ time on charges alleging he wounded and maimed his partner twice in one day last fall.
Salem Gordon Leon Paul, 26, of Veterans Court, appeared in Fredericton provincial court by telephone from provincial jail Thursday, as he’s been remanded on eight charges alleging violence against a woman on four different occasions.
He elected to be tried in provincial court and pleaded not guilty to all counts Thursday.
The most serious of the alleged offences are two charges of aggravated assault, both against Miranda Berube on Nov. 29. One accuses him of “maiming her,” and the other accuses him of “wounding her.”
Paul also denied assaulting Berube with weapons (a full can of beer and an ashtray) Oct. 11; assaulting her and causing bodily harm Nov. 3; and unlawfully entering Berube’s home at Kingsclear First Nation, assaulting her, assaulting two Mounties with a knife and possessing a knife to commit an offence, all on Dec. 19.
Judge Cameron Gunn scheduled Paul’s trial for June 2 and remanded him again until that time.
