A former Bilijk (Kingsclear) First Nation man is challenging his convictions on various charges for violently battering and traumatizing a woman four years ago.

Fredericton provincial court Judge Scott Brittain convicted Winton Labelle Walter Saulis, 36, of no fixed address, after trial late last year of assaulting Chanel Sabattis with a knife, unlawfully entering her Bilijk First Nation home, unlawfully confining her and uttering threats to cause death and/or bodily harm to Sabattis’ father, all on Dec. 18, 2021.

The judge sentenced Saulis in March to seven years in prison, less credit for time he’d served on remand.

However, Saulis filed a handwritten notice of appeal with the New Brunswick Court of Appeal earlier this month, seeking to overturn those convictions.
