A Welamukotuk (Oromocto) First Nation man who seriously injured teenage friends when he drove drunk and crashed in the fall of 2021 narrowly avoided a stint behind bars last week.

Dustin Sacobie, 24, of Moccassin Lane, appeared in Fredericton provincial court Friday for a sentencing hearing.

He’d previously pleaded guilty to a summary count of impaired driving causing bodily harm.

Crown prosecutor Rodney Jordan said police were dispatched to the scene of a single-vehicle accident the night of Nov. 21, 2021. A Ford Ranger had gone off the road and struck a pole, court heard.

Paramedics were tending to two teenage girls at the scene, the prosecutor said, and both were seriously injured.
