Impaired driver with tragic past gets minimum
Judge declines to impose longer driving ban on Brandon Richard Forret, 26, formerly of Harvey, despite past conviction for 2017 crash that claimed younger brother’s life
A past conviction for dangerous driving causing death loomed over the sentencing hearing earlier this month for a former Harvey resident on a new impaired-driving offence.
Brandon Richard Forret, 26, formerly of Harvey and now living in Alberta, pleaded guilty in Fredericton provincial court in November to a charge of having an elevated blood-alcohol level within two hours of driving.
He was back in court March 4 for his sentencing hearing.
Crown prosecutor Jennifer Cooper said that on Aug. 19 at about 11:35 p.m., the Fredericton Police Force was conducting speeding enforcement on Hanwell Road when an officer took note of a vehicle travelling at 84 kilometres per hour in a 70 km/hour zone.
Police pulled the car over, she said, the driver, identified as Forret, told police he was on his way home from a friend’s house.
