Hoyt woman accused of aggravated assault
Laura Karen Burton, 39, elected for a provincial court trial, which has been scheduled for the spring of 2024
A Hoyt woman accused of wounding a man during the course of an alleged assault will stand trial on the charge in a year’s time.
Laura Karen Burton, 39, of Route 101, faces an RCMP charge of aggravated assault, alleging she wounded Donald Treen on March 28, 2023.
She elected Friday to be tried in provincial court and pleaded not guilty.
The case was set over to Monday in Fredericton provincial court to give the Crown a chance to check on when witnesses would be available.
Judge Lucie Mathurin scheduled Burton’s trial for April 9, 2024.
An aggravated assault is typically the charge laid in an assault case in which a complainant’s life is endangered as a result of the offence, and it’s most commonly laid in cases involving stabbings.
However, it’s unclear from the charge what the specific circumstances of the alleged assault are in Burton’s case.

Very unfortunate for everyone to have to wait a year before going to court.
