Two city community-safety officers found themselves under attack when the shirtless man they were trying to check on flung an axe at them in uptown Fredericton this summer, court heard Wednesday.

Shayne Lucas Springall, 34, of no fixed address, appeared in Fredericton provincial court in custody and in person Wednesday for sentencing.

He’d previously pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting Jordan Smith and André Silva with a weapon (an axe), causing more than $5,000 in damage to a 2021 Ford F150 belonging to the City of Fredericton and breaching his probation.
