Hit-and-run driver jailed six months
Peter James Burrell, 63, of Fredericton, kept on driving after striking cyclist two years ago
A judge jailed a Fredericton man Tuesday for leaving the scene of an injurious accident two years ago, stating the court had to send a message that taking off to avoid consequences won’t be tolerated.
Peter James Burrell, 63, of Southampton Drive, previously pleaded guilty in Fredericton provincial court for leaving the scene of an accident in which cyclist Brian Atkinson sustained serious bodily harm.
He went through a sentencing hearing in March, during which the Crown sought a six-month jail term, while the defence recommended a conditional sentence of six to 12 months to be served in the community.

Burrell was back before Judge Mélanie Poirier LeBlanc on Tuesday afternoon to hear her decision on sentence.
