Two young capital-region men admitted Monday to assaults on a man in Fredericton two years ago that led to the victim being hospitalized with a brain injury.

Braeden Carty, 21, of Bear Drive in Fredericton; and Isaiah Nicholas Phillips, 23, of Maugerville; previously elected to be tried in the Court of King’s Bench by a judge and jury on a joint charge of committing an aggravated assault on James Alexander, thereby endangering his life in Fredericton on Sept. 25, 2022.

Their two-week trial was set to begin with jury selection Monday morning, but deputy sheriffs were turning potential jurors away at the entryway of the Burton Courthouse, advising them the case was going to proceed before a King’s Bench judge alone.
