Grocery-store worker admits to stealing cash
Dalton Faubert, 18, of Burton, was working at the Atlantic Superstore in Oromocto last fall when he stole money from his employer
A young Burton man is facing a potential jail sentence after admitting Tuesday that he stole cash while working at a grocery store in Oromocto.
Dalton Faubert, 18, of Darryl Drive, pleaded guilty in Fredericton provincial court Tuesday to stealing money from the Atlantic Superstore in Oromocto between Oct. 6-19.
The RCMP charge indicates the amount stolen is less than $5,000.
Judge Natalie LeBlanc, looking to determine if Faubert needed a pre-sentence report for his sentencing hearing, asked the prosecution what sort of sentence it might recommend.
“It’s very likely the Crown will be seeking incarceration,” said prosecutor Nina Johnsen.
The reason, she said, is that the theft represents a breach of trust, meaning Faubert was working as an employee at the store when he stole the cash.
Precedents direct lower courts to impose custodial sentences in cases of employee thefts or other such breaches of trust, even for first-time offenders, unless there are exceptional circumstances meriting more lenient penalties.
As such, LeBlanc ordered the preparation of a pre-sentence report, as well as a victim-impact statement.
She scheduled Faubert’s sentencing hearing for July 10.
