Shelter-in-place alert lifted after arrest
Suspect in custody after hours-long standoff on Fredericton’s north side Thursday
A police operation that went on for almost four hours Thursday afternoon in a Nashwaaksis neighbourhood in Fredericton has concluded, the police force advises, and a suspect is in custody.
Shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday, the Fredericton Police Force advised of a potential risk in the Nashwaaksis area between Main and Maple streets.
“Due to an ongoing police operation, residents within the area of Wallace Avenue, Oak Avenue, Park Street and Maple Street are advised to shelter in place,” the force said in an alert on social media.
“All other residents are asked to avoid the area until further notice.”
The shelter-in-place advisory remained in effect for hours as the operation continued, but at 6:41 p.m. Thursday, the police force followed up on social media to report the situation had been resolved.
“The operation in the Maple Street area has concluded,” it said. “Police remain on scene as the investigation continues.”
The safety warning was lifted with the arrest of a suspect.
“At approximately 12:15 p.m. on July 4, 2024, Fredericton Police Force became aware that a male known to be armed and dangerous, wanted on a Canada-wide warrant and unlawfully at large, was in our jurisdiction,” the force said on social media Thursday evening.
“Police responded to a residence where he was believed to be located and secured the area. The individual has been successfully arrested and taken into custody.”
The police force thanked the public for its co-operation during the situation.
It said more details would be made available once the case makes its way to court.
