Fredericton man accused of assaulting, suffocating woman
Kyle Clahane, 31, released on conditions, including requirements to reside in Nova Scotia and remain there except for court
A Fredericton man detained on serious assault allegations against a local woman has been freed on conditions.
Kyle Clahane, 31, of Saunders Street, made his initial appearance in Fredericton provincial court by telephone from the city police station Wednesday.
The Fredericton Police Force laid charges of indictable assault, assault by choking, unlawful confinement and an attempt to suffocate a woman using his hands or water to enable him to assault her.
All four counts allege offences against Sonia Levesque on Tuesday in Fredericton.
Crown prosecutor Rebecca Butler objected to Clahane’s release Wednesday, and Judge Lucie Mathurin remanded him until his bail hearing, set for the following morning.
But when that hearing convened Thursday, prosecutor Rodney Jordan said the Crown was consenting to Clahane’s release, subject to the conditions of a release order.
Among the conditions the defendant must follow are to reside with his father, Patrick (Mike) Clahane in Centerville, N.S.; to remain in that province except for court dates or meetings with legal counsel; and to have no contact with Levesque.
Judge Mary Jane Richards set the case over to March 16 for election of mode of trial and pleas.
