Father jailed 1½ years for molesting his kid
Judge says sentencing 55-year-old defendant poses challenge to court because there’s no way to know on which of the seven alleged incidents of sexual touching jury convicted him
In sentencing a father to 18 months in jail for touching his own child for a sexual purpose in Fredericton years ago, a judge said Wednesday he had to reassess the evidence presented to the jury that convicted the man.
Court of King’s Bench Justice Thomas Christie rendered his decision on sentence at the Burton Courthouse on Wednesday in the case of a 55-year-old Newfoundland and Labrador man for touching his child for a sexual purpose.
A jury found him guilty of that charge and sexual assault, which occurred in Fredericton and other locations in New Brunswick between Dec. 1, 2002, and March 31, 2011.
There’s a court-ordered publication ban in effect protecting the identity of the victim, and given the offender’s parental relationship, the Fredericton Independent isn’t naming him so as to comply with the ban.
