Fatal accident draws weekend jail time
Roderick Gerard Hallihan, 54, of Renous, sentenced for driving without due care and attention, causing death of Mackenzie “Mack” Green in Coles Island area September 2022
When police arrived on the scene of what would prove to be a fatal accident, Roderick Gerard Hallihan told them the other driver had braked to turn without signalling.
But the investigation showed Hallihan had been barrelling down the highway in his pickup at almost twice the speed limit seconds before he rear-ended a small car.
Hallihan, 54, of Renous, appeared in Fredericton provincial court Thursday for sentencing.
He’d previously pleaded guilty to a charge under the provincial Motor Vehicle Act of driving without due care and attention.
Crown prosecutor Rodney Jordan and defence lawyer Patrick Hurley presented a joint recommendation on sentence: a three-month jail term, to be served intermittently on weekends, a $2,000 fine and a year of probation.
