Families of victim, accused clash at court
Defence for 18-year-old suspect in fatal stabbing of Mark “Barnzie” Albert Brooks II in June 2024 concedes evidence is sufficient to set case over for jury trial in Court of King’s Bench
Tensions were high in and outside a Fredericton courtroom Thursday during a preliminary inquiry into the murder of a Sitansisk elder, as family members of the victim and defendant threatened one another.
The 18-year-old man appeared in Fredericton youth court in person and in custody Thursday for his preliminary inquiry on a second-degree murder charge.

The case stems from the fatal stabbing of Mark “Barnzie” Albert Brooks II, 71, of Sitansisk (St. Mary’s) First Nation the night of June 21 in the parking lot of Tim Hortons on Union Street.
The defendant was 17 years old at the time of the incident, so his identity is protected by the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
