A former deputy sheriff and provincial public-safety officer will have a criminal record for unsafe storage of a firearm, as a judge ruled a discharge would undermine public confidence in the justice system.

Michael (Mike) Phillipe Breau, 35, of Wilsey Road in Rusagonis, appeared in Fredericton provincial court to hear the court’s decision on his sentence for improper storage of a firearm.

The March 29, 2022, offence stemmed from Breau leaving his service sidearm fully loaded and resting in his duty belt on a coat rack in his living room.

At the time, he was employed as a peace officer with the provincial Department of Justice and Public Safety, and when an RCMP discovered the unsecured handgun, it was accessible to his young children next to where they watch TV.
