A former public-safety officer who lost his job after leaving his work firearm loaded and unsecured around his kids is appealing his conviction for careless storage of the weapon.

Michael (Mike) Phillipe Breau, 35, of Wilsey Road in Rusagonis, was convicted last year of storing a handgun improperly and was sentenced in November to two years of probation.

The case arose after the RCMP investigated him in 2022 after receiving a criminal complaint from New Maryland resident Michelle Russell.

The Mounties attended Breau’s home March 29, 2022, to arrest him and charge him with criminal harassment and illegal access to a computer database, and after he was escorted back to the Oromocto detachment, an officer discovered a loaded, unsecured firearm in his living room, fully accessible to his unsupervised children.
