Duo detained on stolen-car, firearm charges
Police say investigation into vehicle thefts led to Nov. 26 arrests of Stuart Raymond McCann, 42, of Oromocto First Nation, and Alexander James Broome, 23, of Oromocto
The Fredericton Police Force says officers’ recovery of a stolen vehicle last week also led to the arrests of two suspects and the discovery of an unsecured rifle in the back of the car.
The police force issued a news release Monday advising that officers made a break recently in an investigation into the ongoing problem with vehicle thefts in the capital.

“On Nov. 26, 2024, the Fredericton Police Force’s street crimes unit, with support from patrols, successfully recovered a stolen vehicle, as part of investigations into multiple vehicle thefts,” it said.
“During the incident, two individuals were arrested. Upon arrest and seizure of the vehicle, police located a loaded, high-powered rifle that was insecure in the back seat of the stolen vehicle.”
Arrested and remanded into custody after initial court appearances were Stuart Raymond McCann, 42, of Moccasin Lane on the Welamukotuk (Oromocto) First Nation; and Alexander James Broome, 23, of Deer Park in Oromocto.
Both face Nov. 26 counts of possessing a stolen 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe belonging to Stephanie Dufour, possessing a prohibited and altered firearm without a licence, occupying a vehicle in which they knew there was that prohibited firearm, storing that firearm improperly, possessing break-in instruments (bolt cutters, a grinder and a hammer) and breaching probation orders.
McCann is also charged with violating a court-ordered prohibition against possessing firearms, while Broome is accused of possessing methamphetamine, both arising from the same Nov. 26 incident in Fredericton.
Furthermore, Broome faces unrelated counts alleging he possessed stolen copper wire belonging to Bell Aliant, damaged Bell Aliant property and resisted police Const. Christian Vidal, all in Jemseg on Nov. 21.
Both are due back before a Fredericton provincial court judge Thursday for bail hearings.
