Drug-trafficking suspects deny charges

Two capital-region men are headed to trial after both denied numerous charges against them Wednesday, including drug possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Christopher Scott Phillips, 42, of Crouse Road in Zealand, and Maurice Chester Paul, 43, of no fixed address, appeared in Fredericton provincial court in custody Wednesday, scheduled to elect mode of trial and enter pleas to numerous counts.
Paul appeared in custody in person, while Phillips appeared by video conference from a provincial jail. Both were remanded after their arrests in Fredericton on Dec. 16.
The pair is jointly charged with possession of hydromorphone, cocaine, fentanyl, meth and Xanax for the purpose of trafficking; possession of a stolen 2021 Dodge Ram belonging to Kenneth Van Aarle; possession of break-in instruments; possession of cash deemed to be the proceeds of crime; possession of 22-calibre ammunition while prohibited; and probation violations, all alleged to have occurred Dec. 16.
