Drug trafficker no-show for sentencing
Scott Cameron Powers, 51, of Fredericton - who tried in vain to withdraw guilty pleas on meth, weapon charges - failed to attend court Tuesday for hearing to determine sentence
A Fredericton man failed to convince a court earlier this year to allow him to withdraw guilty pleas to allegations of drug trafficking and weapon possession was a no-show for his sentencing hearing Tuesday.
Scott Cameron Powers, 51, of Irvine Street, pleaded guilty in Fredericton provincial court 10 months ago June 16, 2023, charges of possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a weapon (plastic knuckles) for a purpose dangerous to the public peace, both of which occurred in the capital.
After his sentencing hearing was postponed a couple of times, the case took a turn in February when he parted ways with his defence counsel and applied to the court to withdraw his guilty pleas.
During a hearing in May, at which Powers represented himself, he claimed he was innocent of the charges and that he was confused as to what was happening in court when he admitted to the crimes.
