As a mentally ill defendant kept insisting on pleading guilty to several offences Friday, a duty-counsel lawyer was just as insistent that the accused didn’t understand what was happening.

Andrew Derek Washburn, 32, of no fixed address, was back in Fredericton provincial court Friday, in person and in custody, scheduled to enter pleas to several charges stemming from events last month.

He’s accused of performing an indecent act by masturbating in public and then resisting arrest March 10, and of stealing a bike from Savage’s Bicycle Centre, setting a fire at Kings Place while being reckless as to it being occupied and against resisting arrest March 30.
