A sex offender suspected of having contact with children in violation of a court order will undergo a psychiatric assessment to determine if he might be exempt from criminal responsibility.

Brandon Lee Cote, 30, of Finnamore Street in Oromocto, appeared in Fredericton provincial court by telephone from the Saint John Regional Correctional Centre on Thursday,a nd defence lawyer was on hand in the courtroom to represent him.

Cote was scheduled to elect mode of trial and enter pleas on two charges alleging he breached a court order barring him from unsupervised contact with children under the age of 16, stemming from alleged events in Fredericton between Sept. 1 and Jan. 29, and then an instance in Oromocto on Jan. 6.
