Criminal-responsibility assessment sought

A Fredericton man previously deemed fit to stand trial on an accusation he fired a rifle at a man in Geary last year is seeking a further psychiatric assessment on his mental state at the time of the alleged incident.
Darrell Richard Barnes, 51, of Brunswick Street, faces Oct. 3 charges of discharging a firearm at Dustin Madden in Geary with intent to wound, maim or disfigure him, or to endanger his life; pointing a firearm at Madden; possessing a rifle without a licence; and possessing stolen social insurance and Visa cards.
He’s also accused of failing to attend court Nov. 23.
