The investigation into a deliberate fire that seriously damaged a historic bandstand structure at a downtown Fredericton park is advancing, with a suspect being identified, says a police spokesperson.

The gazebo in Wilmot Park just next to the splash pad in downtown Fredericton was damaged in a fire the night of July 2, and the city police force advised last week the blaze was intentionally set.

That prompted a police investigation into the alleged arson.

Police spokesperson Sonya Gilks told the Fredericton Independent on Wednesday that investigators have set their sights on a possible perpetrator.
