Cops blow deadline to get suspects to court
Fredericton Police Force lays new charges against Tiffany Lynn Martin, 34, and Bradley Douglas Webb, 37, more than 24 hours after arrests; defence opposes remand requests
Defence lawyers argued Wednesday that drug defendants charged with new counts more than 24 hours after their arrests should be sprung from custody, given the violation of their rights.
When Fredericton provincial court Judge Natalie LeBlanc convened plea court Thursday morning, she noted there were a couple of cases that were time-sensitive.
She pointed out that two defendants - later identified as Tiffany Lynn Martin, 34, of Ebony Drive; and Bradley Douglas Webb, 37, of no fixed address - had been arrested by the Fredericton Police Force on Tuesday morning.
The judge further noted the 24-hour deadline to bring detained suspects before the court and to lay charges against them was fast-approaching - within just minutes.
