Copper-theft suspect faces new charges
Jason Phillip Cote, 45, of Geary, seeks adjournment for legal counsel on unrelated driving allegations, while lawyer for Riley William Novak, 28, needs time to review Crown disclosure
Two capital-region men accused in connection with a copper-wire heist in May sought adjournments Thursday, in part because one of them faces new charges unrelated to the theft allegation.
Jason Phillip Cote, 45, of Broad Road in Geary, appeared in Fredericton provincial court Thursday with defence lawyer Edward Derrah, scheduled to elect mode of trial and enter a plea to a May 16 count of possession of stolen copper wiring, the property of Bell Aliant, worth more than $5,000.
However, the accused was also making his first court appearance on two new charges alleging earlier offences.
Cote now faces Dec. 23 charges of dangerous driving and fleeing from police in a motor vehicle.
