Conflict hearing in murder case adjourned
Nathan Gorham, defence counsel for Corey Agnew, 35, of Minto, concedes he can’t represent defendant, but wants other lawyers in his firm to act as accused’s lawyer in case
A prominent defence lawyer has conceded he can’t represent a Minto man accused of killing a former client of his, but he wants other lawyers in his firm to be allowed to act as defence counsel instead.
Corey Agnew, 35, of Willow Drive in Minto, appeared in person and in custody in Fredericton provincial court Monday, scheduled for a hearing on an issue with his defence counsel on murder charges.
Agnew is accused of two counts of first-degree murder in the Nov. 25 deaths of Robert (Robbie) Wayne Waugh, 47, and Victoria King, 23.
Defence lawyer Nathan Gorham had been listed as Agnew’s defence counsel of record, though he’d yet to appear in person in court on the case. Other lawyers from his firm had appeared as his agent previously.
However, last month, Gorham notified the court he’d be seeking direction from the court on a potential conflict-of-interest issue, and a hearing on the issue was set down for Monday.
