Cliffe Street standoff suspect had been wanted since October
Aaron Glen Narvey, 32, was out of it and unresponsive for his initial court appearance by telephone Thursday
The man arrested on Fredericton’s north side after a standoff Wednesday night had been wanted on an outstanding warrant since October for allegedly assaulting police.
Aaron Glen Narvey, 32, of no fixed address, was charged in Fredericton provincial court Thursday afternoon with counts stemming from an encounter with police Wednesday night.
Narvey’s arrest occurred Wednesday night after a standoff at a residence on Cliffe Street on the city’s north side.
New charges stemming from events Wednesday night were laid in Fredericton provincial court Thursday, and they related to alleged offences against family members.
Aaron Narvey now faces March 8 counts of assaulting his mother Shelley Brewer and brother Kristopher Narvey with a weapon (bear spray), unlawfully confining Brewer, uttering threats to cause her death and/or bodily harm, breaching a police undertaking to have no contact with his mother, and breaching the terms of his probation.
The Fredericton Police Force issued a public advisory in October announcing that Narvey was wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant.
The force also issued an alert on social media Wednesday night that it had an operation underway at the south end of Cliffe Street and warned the public to stay away from the area.
Photos on social media showed the force’s emergency response team was deployed at the scene.
The force said on social media officers responded to the scene at about 8:30 p.m. and the standoff lasted until 11:30 p.m.
Narvey made his initial provincial court appearance by telephone from the police station Thursday afternoon – sort of.
Court heard officers had trouble rousing him at the station, and he was unresponsive when he was put on the phone.
Judge Anne Dugas-Horsman set the matter over to Friday to give the defendant time to get his wits about him, and she remanded him until that time.
Police had been looking for Narvey for months leading up to the events of Wednesday evening.
The Fredericton Police Force issued a news release Oct. 20 noting officers were seeking tips on Narvey’s whereabouts and advising he was wanted on a warrant.
“Narvey is charged with several offences, including assaulting police officers with a weapon (vehicle) and flight from police,” the release said.
“Narvey should not be approached.”
In addition to the new charges laid Thursday, Narvey faces Oct. 13 counts of assaulting a Fredericton police officer with a weapon (a car), flight, dangerous driving, possession of a stolen car and breach of probation.
Furthermore, he has other outstanding charges: a Sept. 14 count of violating his probation by failing to report to his probation officer; Sept. 15 counts of assaulting his mother, damaging her property and breaching probation; and a Nov. 14 count of breaching a police undertaking by failing to attend court as required.
