Charge pending after Sept. 26 fatal crash
37-year-old suspect from Sussex set to appear in Woodstock court in August to answer to allegation arising from Hay Settlement incident that claimed two lives, RCMP reports
A suspect has been identified and arrested in connection with a single-vehicle crash last fall that claimed two lives, and the RCMP reports, and that person will appear in court in Woodstock in August.
In a news release issued Sept. 27, the Western Region Valley detachment of the RCMP said officers were seeking tips about a fatal incident the day before in Hay Settlement, about 15 kilometres south of Woodstock.
“On Sept. 26, 2024, at approximately 1:30 a.m., members of the Western Valley Region RCMP detachment responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash on Highway 2, near Hay Settlement,” the release said.
“The crash is believed to have occurred when the vehicle, travelling eastbound, lost control and drove into the ditch.”
Two Sussex men - ages 43 and 45 - died due to injuries in the crash, it said.
“Police have reason to believe that a third person may have been in the vehicle at the time of the crash and has yet to be identified,” the release said last fall.
In a followup Tuesday, the RCMP reported that investigators have since identified that individual who survived the wreck and allegedly fled.
“On June 16, 2025, the West District RCMP arrested a 37-year-old from Sussex, N.B., in connection with this incident,” police reported on social media.
“The individual has since been released and will appear in Woodstock provincial court on Aug. 19.”
