Burglary, drug suspect pleads guilty to 10 charges
Dylan James MacElwain, 33, will be sentenced in late March for possession for the purpose of trafficking, break and enter, and more
A New Brunswick man in custody on drug-trafficking and break-in charges admitted to all counts Thursday and will be sentenced next month.
Dylan James MacElwain, 33, of no fixed address, appeared in Fredericton provincial court by telephone from jail Thursday and pleaded guilty to 10 counts, mostly related to drug possession and a break-in.
He admitted to possessing methamphetamine, MDMA (also known as ecstasy or molly) and benzodiazepines for the purpose of trafficking on Sept. 24, as well as to breaking into A&J Hanna Construction on Alison Boulevard, damaging a fence there, possessing a stolen trailer belonging to the business and breaching a probation order.
MacElwain also pleaded guilty to Sept. 10 counts of simple possession of MDMA and alprazolam (Xanax), and to driving while suspended Aug. 21.
Judge Natalie LeBlanc ordered the preparation of victim-impact statements and scheduled the offender’s sentencing hearing for March 24.
The New Brunswick Court of Appeal has directed lower courts that save for exceptional circumstances, those convicted of crimes related to the trafficking of hard drugs can expect to be sentenced to federal-prison terms.
