More charges laid in weekend stabbing case
Shawn Patrick Sacobie, 35, of Fredericton, apologizes in open court for his actions related to Twenty/20 Club incident early Saturday
A Fredericton man accused in a triple stabbing incident appeared to admit to the crimes Monday, apologizing in open court for his actions.
Shawn Patrick Sacobie, 35, of Main Street, appeared in Fredericton provincial court Monday afternoon via video conference from jail, scheduled to go through a bail hearing.
He was charged with a single count of aggravated assault during a weekend remand court appearance Saturday, alleging he endangered the life of Cody Leblanc by wounding and/or disfiguring him.
A Fredericton Police Force officer laid additional charges Monday afternoon, just ahead of the scheduled bail hearing.
Sacobie is now also accused of assaulting both Jason Ferris and Eric Pryor with a weapon (a knife), as well as uttering a threat to city police Const. Matt Bujold to cause him death and/or bodily harm.
Crown prosecutor Gwynne Hearn objected to Sacobie’s release on the new charges as well, and duty counsel Gerald Pugh said the defendant was seeking to postpone his bail hearing.
“I’d just like to say I’m very sorry for everything I caused,” Sacobie told court Monday afternoon.
Judge Anne Dugas-Horsman cautioned him against saying anything further about the case, and she adjourned his bail hearing to Thursday afternoon.
All charges against Sacobie allege events in Fredericton on Saturday, and they stem from a violence incident at the Twenty/20 Club shortly before closing time early that same morning.
The Fredericton Police Force issued a news release Saturday noting officers arrested a suspect, now known to be Sacobie, at the downtown bar on Regent Street in the wee hours of Saturday morning after three people were stabbed.
“A patron had been asked to leave the premises and subsequently stabbed two staff members and one other patron,” the release said, noting the incident occurred shortly before 1:45 a.m.
“Police arrested an individual on scene without incident.”
The police force noted the person arrested appeared in weekend remand court Saturday.
The release also stated that all three victims were taken to the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital for treatment, and that one of them required surgery.
