Standoff suspect accused of stabbing another man
Bradley Anthony Reid, 31, of Fredericton, has been remanded pending a bail hearing
A Fredericton man arrested after a standoff at a northside residence Tuesday is facing a charge of aggravated assault, alleging he stabbed another man the same day.
Bradley Anthony Reid, 31, of Douglas Avenue, appeared in Fredericton provincial court by telephone from the city police station Wednesday afternoon.
He was charged with committing an aggravated assault Tuesday by wounding Wilbur Elliott in Fredericton.
Crown prosecutor Rebecca Butler objected to Reid’s release, and Judge Lucie Mathurin remanded him pending a bail hearing set for Thursday.
At the prosecutor’s request, the judge also imposed an order barring Reid from communicating with Elliott.
The Fredericton Police Force advised late Tuesday morning that people should steer clear of Hillcourt Drive on the city’s north side as there was an active police operation in effect there.
Officers - including members of the force’s emergency response team - had surrounded a home at the end of Hillcourt Drive after someone had barricaded themselves inside.
Police could be heard trying to communicate with the person inside over a megaphone at the scene.
Eventually, the person who’d been inside the residence - now known to have been Reid - was arrested.
Police blocked public access to the east-end block of the street until just before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, though officers remained on the scene.
In a subsequent news release issued late Tuesday afternoon, the police force said officers responded to a report of an adult male who had been stabbed and had arrived at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in serious condition.
It was from there officers located the suspect in the reported stabbing at the Hillcourt Drive address, the release said, prompting the police presence at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday and subsequent standoff.
Police now report Elliott is in stable condition in hospital.
