Bilijk man admits to maiming girlfriend
Salem Gordon Leon Paul, 27, previously denied seriously violent assaults against his intimate partner, Miranda Berubé, and attacking Mounties with a knife
A Bilijk (Kingsclear) First Nation man scheduled to stand trial next month for maiming his girlfriend opted Friday to admit to that and other crimes against her.
Salem Gordon Leon Paul, 27, of Veterans Court, appeared in Fredericton provincial court by telephone from provincial jail Friday, having previously been remanded on multiple charges alleging intimate-partner violence.
He pleaded not guilty in early March to eight charges, but on Friday, he changed his pleas to guilty to most counts.
Paul pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm to Miranda Berubé on Nov. 3; aggravated assault by maiming her Nov. 29; and Dec. 19 counts of unlawful entry into her home, assault on Berubé, assault on two Mounties with a knife and possession of the knife to commit an offence.
Judge Cameron Gunn ordered the preparation of a pre-sentence report and victim-impact statements for consideration at Paul’s sentencing hearing, which he scheduled for June 30.
The judge remanded Paul again until that date.
Two other charges - an assault on Berubé with weapons (a full can of beer and an ashtray) Oct. 11, and another Nov. 29 aggravated assault on Berubé, alleging he wounded her - were set over until the sentencing hearing, after which it’s expected the prosecution will withdraw them.
