Aviation program to take off at STU
St. Thomas University introduces new bachelor of arts degree program with flight training
St. Thomas University announced this month it’s introducing a new pilot program - but it’s here to stay, not just something the institution is trying out.
The university issued a news release last week revealing that beginning in September, it’ll offer a new bachelor of arts program it has dubbed its “aviation stream.”
The school is partnering with Moncton Flight College (MFC) Training to offer the undergraduate degree to students who want to add flight training to their professional skill sets.
Students in the four-year program will graduate with a bachelor of arts with a commercial pilot licence, multi-engine class rating and Group 1 instrument rating, the release said.
”They will begin their studies at STU, completing a full year of academic coursework in the social sciences and humanities before beginning flight training and ground school courses with MFC during their second year,” it said.
“This is an excellent addition to our existing offerings that will enhance opportunities for students seeking an exciting and fulfilling education and career,” said university president and vice-chancellor Nauman Farooqi.
MFC’s Fredericton campus is only about a 10-minute drive from STU, he said, so the convenience made for a logical partnership.
“The addition of a university degree to professional flight training will enhance career opportunities for graduates in addition to serving a desire among students to access a more traditional and full university experience,” he added, noting MFC has a solid reputation in flight education and training.

Fantastic idea. Love the phrase, pilot project. The course should definitely take off.
