A Bilijk (Kingsclear) First Nation man who sliced open his girlfriend’s face and forced her to write a good-bye letter to her son has been sentenced to seven years in prison for the brutal incident.

Winton Labelle Walter Saulis, 36, of no fixed address, was found guilty after trial of Dec. 18, 2021, counts of assault with a knife on Chanel Sabattis, unlawful entry into her Bilijk First Nation home, unlawful confinement and a threat to cause death or bodily harm to Sabattis’ father.

After several delays, Saulis was back in Fredericton provincial court Thursday, in person and in custody, to hear Judge Scott Brittain’s decision on his sentence.
