14 years for brutalizing, raping woman
Judge rejects nine-year prison recommendation for Fredericton man, 43, who beat, sexually assaulted woman for 40 days, ruling heinousness of his crimes merited longer sentence
The psychological and physical scars left after a Fredericton man beat and raped a former girlfriend while holding her captive for weeks called for a stiffer prison term than what the Crown sought, a judge ruled Thursday.
The 43-year-old defendant appeared in Fredericton provincial court Thursday by video from a remand facility to hear Judge Pierre Gionet’s decision on sentence in his case.
The offender had pleaded guilty earlier this year to counts of aggravated assault, sexual assaults, assaults with weapons (including a belt), unlawful confinement, choking, threats and other assaults, all between Jan. 1 and Feb. 9, 2024, in Fredericton.
The sexual-assault count also relayed to events between Nov. 1, 2023, and Feb. 9, 2024.
