Virtual bail court tries to find its footing
Province testing out new online-hearing program once per week with Fredericton cases
The government of New Brunswick is testing out an online-only court once a week in February to get its new virtual bail court up and running, but it’s encountered a few bumps on the road as it begins its journey.
The province announced in late November that the Department of Justice and Public Safety was establishing a new method of adjudicating show-cause hearings, also known as bail hearings.
The department said Judge Karen Lee, who presided over Woodstock provincial court matters, was being named a travelling judge and was heading up the virtual bail project.
That program started officially earlier this month, as virtual bail hearings, held online through Microsoft Teams sessions, would be held once a week for cases arising out of the Fredericton judicial district.
