Fredericton’s firefighters’ union is challenging a judge’s decision to remove city hall as a defendant in a lawsuit brought by an ex-firefighter who claims he was forced out of his job.

Gregory Billings, a former member of the Fredericton Fire Department, is suing his union, the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1053, for failing to represent his interests in his departure from the fire department over his opposition to protocols and policies enacted by the City of Fredericton during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Initially, the city had also been named as a defendant in the lawsuit but was later removed, and the union sought to have the municipality added back in as a third party.

The city successfully brought a motion before the Court of King’s Bench last year to strike the third-party claim, prompting the union to appeal that aspect of the case.
