An 18-year-old youth, scheduled for a jury trial later this year on a second-degree murder charge in the 2024 stabbing death of an elderly Fredericton man, opted to admit to the crime Wednesday.

The defendant was charged following the stabbing death of Sitansisk (St. Mary’s) First Nation elder Mark “Barnzie” Albert Brooks II, 71, near the Tim Hortons on Union Street the night of June 21, 2024.

Because the young man was only 17 years old at the time, his identity is protected under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The case was scheduled to go to trial before a Court of King’s Bench judge and jury this spring, but the matter was back before Justice Thomas Christie on Wednesday for a pre-trial conference.
