Teen murder suspect denied bail
17-year-old boy accused of killing Sitansisk elder in June remanded pending end of case
A judge ruled Thursday that the Crown had shown cause why a 17-year-old Fredericton boy accused of killing a Sitansisk (St. Mary’s) First Nation elder two months ago should be remanded.
The teenage defendant - whose identity is protected under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act - appeared in Fredericton court by video from the youth jail in Miramichi for a bail hearing Thursday.
The boy is accused of second-degree murder in the June 21 stabbing death of Mark “Barnzie” Albert Brooks II, 71, next to Tim Hortons on Union Street in Fredericton.
Evidence presented at Thursday’s hearing is subject to a ban on publication until the case concludes, as are the reasons for Judge David Walker’s decision.
