Standoff suspect withdraws guilty plea
Vincent John Ryan Currie, 42, had sought to be sentenced for being unlawfully at large in violation of federal sentence, but Crown's change in position derails court proceedings
A wanted federal parolee whose presence in Fredericton saw police lock down a northside neighbourhood last week withdrew a guilty plea Tuesday after the Crown changed its position on sentence.
Vincent John Ryan Currie, 42, formerly of Fredericton, elected Monday to be tried in provincial court and pleaded guilty to a charge of being unlawfully at large before the expiration of a federal prison sentence he was serving for 2018 offences committed in Fredericton.
The charge arose after his arrest Thursday at a northside residence.
Currie was at the centre of a standoff in a Nashwaaksis neighbourhood that began shortly after noon Thursday and continued for almost four hours.
