Including Wolastoqey language on Fredericton trail signage more than symbolic gesture

A point of pride in Fredericton is the city’s trail system, touted by many as one of the capital’s top accomplishments in recent years and something that adds to its appeal and quality of life.

This week, the City of Fredericton unveiled new names and new signage for three key sections of the trail. Six signs along the North Riverfront Trail, the South Riverfront Trail and the Cliffe Trail will now feature information in English, French and Wolastoqey.

• The North Riverfront Trail is now known as Kansuhsaptuwey (pronounced “Gun-zeus-up-tu-way”), meaning “the ancestor’s tracks left on the trail.” 

• The South Riverfront Trail is now Wapapaptuwey (“Wah-bub-up-tu-way”), which means “the Trail of Wampum Belt teachings.”

• The Cliffe will be known as Kci-Lakutuwakonaptuwey (“Kchee-law-good-do-wah-gn-up-tu-way”), which refers to it being a trail of great peace and friendship, stemming from a historic treaty relationship to prioritize peace and friendship.
