Noises near school weren’t gunshots - cops
Police responded to Sunset Acres area Friday morning after reports of concerning sounds
Loud noises that some thought were gunshots prompted a precautionary hold-and-secure situation at a northside school Friday morning, but police report it was just a blown transformer.
The Fredericton Police Force issued a news release late Friday morning about a significant officer presence on the capital’s north side, but it advised there was no cause for alarm.
“At approximately 9:40 a.m. [Friday] morning, the Fredericton Police Force received a report of possible gunshots in the Sunset Acres area,” it said.
“Several police units immediately responded to the scene.”
The force said that as a precaution, Sunset Acres Elementary School on McAdam Avenue was placed in a hold-and-secure mode.
Unlike a school lockdown, in which staff and students must remain confined to classrooms, a hold-and-secure status means people can move about freely inside the school but no one is allowed to leave or enter the premises.
“After confirming with NB Power, it was determined the sound was caused by a blown transformer and not gunshots,” the release said. “There was no threat to public safety.”
