More jail time for no-show car thief
Joe-Anna Marcella Hachey, 31, sought time served, conditional sentences to go to rehab
A judge ruled a Fredericton woman who committed property crimes and repeatedly denied court orders merited a longer stint behind bars, rejecting a defence request for time already served.
Joe-Anna Marcella Hachey, 31, of no fixed address, previously pleaded guilty to numerous offences, including damage to a Ford F150, theft of a Mazda Tribute SUV, obstruction of a police officer by giving a false name, numerous breaches of probation and release orders, and failures to attend court, all perpetrated over the past few months in Fredericton.
A sentencing hearing was held in Fredericton provincial court Monday, during which the Crown sought an overall jail term of 16½ months, to be reduced for time spent on remand since her detention in September.
Defence lawyer Wanda Severns suggested her client had already served enough time behind bars to answer to those crimes, and she asked the court to grant conditional sentences to be served in the community to allow her to get into a drug-rehab program.
Judge Pierre Gionet reserved his decision on sentence to Wednesday.
