Mental-illness defence could be raised at trial

Counsel for a homeless man said while her client wished to plead not guilty to several charges, she said it’s likely he will raise a defence that he’s not criminally responsible for them due to a mental disorder.
Logan Bradley Fletcher, 23, of no fixed address, appeared in Fredericton provincial court by telephone from the Saint John Regional Correctional Centre on Thursday for a monitoring appearance.

He faces a variety of criminal charges alleged to have been committed in the spring.
Fletcher is charged with assaulting Michael Davis on May 23; uttering a threat to Jesse Dixon and carrying a weapon (a pipe) for a purpose dangerous to the public peace May 24; defrauding the Royal Barbershop on May 27; harassing Kerri Wortman by stalking her May 31; assaulting a Fredericton police officer, threatening him and resisting arrest June 2; and assaulting two deputy sheriffs in Petersville on June 19 during a custodial transport run.
