Man shot by police at Tobique
Serious Incident Response Team has taken over investigation into RCMP-involved shooting
A man is dead after “a police-involved shooting” on Neqotkuk (Tobique) First Nation on Sunday evening, and the regional police-watchdog agency has taken over the investigation.
The RCMP issued an advisory through social media shortly after 6:30 p.m. Sunday about an ongoing situation in the indigenous community, located about 80 kilometres north of Woodstock.
“The RCMP are currently on scene of a police operation on Tobique First Nation,” the alert stated.
“Please avoid the area and allow police to work. We will share more information when we are able.”
The RCMP didn’t release any additional details in the following hours, but the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) - a Nova Scotia-based agency that deals with deaths and injuries that occur in situations involving police in that province and New Brunswick - provided some additional context just before 10 p.m. Sunday.
“The Serious Incident Response Team is investigating a police-involved shooting that occurred on Tobique First Nation (Neqotkuk) [on Sunday] evening,” it said in its news release.
It noted that a man died in the incident.
“SiRT was contacted by the RCMP shortly after the incident and assumed responsibility for the investigation immediately,” the release said, adding that more information would be forthcoming without indicating when that might be.
