Jury to hear Welamukotuk vigilantism case
Chief Shelley Marie Sabattis, most other defendants opt to be tried in higher court on April 29 break-in and assault allegations; chief doesn’t have counsel for unrelated perjury charge
Most of the nine defendants from the Welamukotuk First Nation charged in an apparent instance of vigilante justice this spring want a jury to hear their case in a higher court.
Welamukotuk (Oromocto) First Nation Chief Shelley Marie Sabattis, 56, and eight others - members of her family and/or the Indigenous community - appeared once again in Fredericton provincial court to answer to break-in and assault charges.
There are four indictable charges before the court, alleging April 29 events at the Welamukotuk First Nation.
