Judge denies easing of offender’s conditions
Michael Sorenson, 42, formerly of Noonan, says prohibition from being within two kilometres of his victims makes finding place to live, building his business too challenging
A sex offender who victimized dozens of minors in New Brunswick, mainly in the capital region, saw his request to relax conditions restricting him in the community rejected by a court Monday.
Michael Sorenson, 42, formerly of Route 10 in Noonan, was sentenced to seven years in prison in September 2023 after pleading guilty to 22 sexual offences involving 17 different underage victims.
Those crimes included sexual assaults, sexual touching of minors, production of child pornography, possession of child porn and voyeurism between from 2008 to 2021 in various locales in New Brunswick, but in Fredericton and surrounding communities.
The Parole Board of Canada granted him day parole in August, and he’s been residing at a halfway house in the area since that time.
That means a court order issued under Section 161 of the Criminal Code of Canada as part of his sentence came into effect, restricting his movements and activities in the community.
But last year, Sorenson filed an application with the courts seeking to vary the conditions of that Section 161 order.
