Jail time for assaulting cops, torching car

First-time offender Shayne Joseph Michaud, 29, of no fixed address, had hoped for conditional sentence to be served in community, but judge finds it wouldn’t be appropriate

A Fredericton-area man who rammed a police officer with a stolen car, set that vehicle on fire after fleeing only to punch another officer in the face was bound for jail after a sentencing hearing Monday.

Shayne Joseph Michaud, 29, of no fixed address, previously pleaded guilty to a long list of offences involving stolen cars, assaults on police officers and breaches of release orders between 2023 and 2025.

He was back in Fredericton provincial court Monday for sentencing.
