A Fredericton man who had penetrative sex with his wife without her consent after telling her he would force himself on her if she didn’t capitulate lost his bid for a community-based sentence Friday.

The 32-year-old northside man appeared in Fredericton provincial court Friday for a sentencing hearing.

Judge Pierre Gionet convicted him after trial last year of sexually assaulting his spouse between June 1 and Aug. 31, 2022.

There’s a court-ordered publication ban in effect protecting the victim’s identity, and given the defendant’s relationship with his former spouse, the Fredericton Independent isn’t naming him either so as to comply with the order.
