A Syrian refugee whose convictions for sexual assault and an indecent act were overturned because the court didn’t ensure he understood his proceedings has seen his case restart in provincial court.

Akram Al Khalifa, 39, of Hawkins Street in Fredericton, was convicted after trial last year of sexually assaulting a woman and exposing his penis to her the night of March 12, 2022.

At the time, he was working as a cab driver, and the complainant was a fare.

A judge sentenced the defendant to 10 months in jail a year ago, but he appealed his conviction and sentence.
